Summary

The rails for agent payments work. The paying agents mostly don't exist yet. Every major payments company now has an agent protocol, a foundation or a pilot. But the money that AI agents measurably spend on their own is in the thousands of dollars a month, not millions. Most of the rest is incentives, wash trading and test traffic.

The three strongest findings

1. The money is tiny and concentrated

x402 moved $1.55M in the 30 days to 28 October 2026, but only $664k passes the organic filter of x402stats.io. Only 93 sellers pass it, out of 13,650, and the top 10 wallets take 85% of the volume. TRM Labs estimates that only 0.6–7.5% of plausibly real x402 commerce is agents paying: about $5,000–11,000 a month. No card network or big-tech agent program has disclosed any agent payment volume.

2. The official x402 clients paid any amount a server asked for, until 18 August 2026

A hostile endpoint could ask an agent wallet for its whole balance of a supported token. The fix (2.23.0) adds a default $1 cap per payment. There was no CVE and no GitHub advisory, so npm audit stays silent. An open issue shows the current client still pays a 10× inflated price, as long as it stays under the cap.

3. Agents now outnumber paying buyers

Virtuals' agent marketplace fell from 819,587 jobs a month in February 2026 to 6,918 in September, once subsidies dried up. On Nostr, a third of all #asknostr questions in the past week got a reply from a self-declared AI or bot account, a median 25 minutes after posting (our own crawl of 245 questions). Of 1,352 Nostr DVM job requests in a week, none carried a bid.
